Preparing for School Success: 4-6 Year Old Program (Kindergarten)

Little Stars programs

Kangaroo Room (4-6 Year Old)

In our Kangaroo Room, we are proud to offer a stimulating and engaging Kindergarten program designed to equip 4 to 6-year-olds with the skills they need for a successful lifelong learning journey. Our approach is based on play, as we believe that children learn best when they are having fun and actively exploring the world around them.

Through our play-based approach, children are encouraged to investigate and explore, developing essential problem-solving and creative thinking skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. We foster positive social interactions and encourage lateral thinking, giving children the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.

At our Kindergarten, we recognise the importance of preparing children for the transition to prep, and we are dedicated to helping them develop the confidence, autonomy, and self-esteem they need to thrive. Our programs are supported by a range of exciting incursion and excursion activities that take place throughout the year, providing children with a well-rounded and enriching educational experience.

Little Stars Early Education Centre in Avondale Heights offers government-funded kindergarten programs for three- and four-year-olds. Our program is led by an Early Childhood Teacher and supported by Diploma-qualified educators.

Our kindergarten curriculum is based on the national Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF V2.0) and the Victorian Early Years Learning Framework (VEYLF), and focuses on the essential skills needed for school readiness and preparing for Prep. It draws inspiration from Montessori (teacher-guided and structured), Reggio Emilia (the environment is the second teacher and children initiate their own learning), and play-based learning theories (through play, children learn valuable skills), enhancing both engagement and learning. Our qualified teachers and educators engage in reflective practice to ensure better curriculum decision making and ongoing support for children.

Our team of teachers fosters strong partnerships with families to support early intervention and ensure a smooth transition to school for all children. We promote cultural awareness throughout the kindergarten program, helping children gain a deeper understanding of diversity. We encourage collaboration among children, fostering an environment where they learn together, develop positive attitudes, and show care and respect for one another. We are committed to ensuring that all of our teachers provide inclusive education for every child, including those who experience separation anxiety, disabilities, or special needs. We believe that all children should feel valued, supported, and cared for at all times.

Key components of our Kindergarten curriculum include:

  • Structured school readiness program.
  • Literacy and numeracy learning through children’s preferred learning style.
  • Regular excursions and incursions.
  • An intergenerational program at the Keilor East Manor Care Community home.
  • Regular learning programs and the local community garden
  • “connecting with Wurundjeri country program”.
  • Visits to St. Martin De Porres Primary School in Term 4.
  • Term 4 lunchbox program.
  • An outdoor program.

These elements reflect our teachers’ commitment to setting high expectations for every child’s learning and development, valuing each child’s unique strengths, encouraging them to embrace new challenges, and fostering an environment where children feel confident expressing their views.

We prioritise children’s social and emotional development, with educators supporting them in self-regulation, problem-solving, self-help skills, and building self-esteem. To document each child’s development, our Early Childhood Teachers provide daily photographs of each child’s day, monthly observations and conduct six-monthly learning assessments, each child has an individual learning scrapbook, allowing us to celebrate your child’s successes and identify areas for improvement.
